When Talking Percentages Wathan Knows Them All

Share

Catcher Dusty Wathan recalls the numbers as easily as his own birthday when asked how he has done throwing out would-be base stealers this season.

“Seven for 11,” he said. “I was 48% last year, 54% the year before and 44% my first year.”

Wathan keeps track of the stats himself, posting them on his locker.

“That’s more important to me than batting average,” said Wathan, who threw out four of seven runners in Thursday night’s 7-6 victory, a feat he enjoyed more than driving in the winning run.

“I feel the most comfortable I’ve ever felt because I’m catching every day,” said Wathan, who was a backup or shared time with other catchers in his first three pro seasons. “It makes a huge difference to come to the park every day and know you are in the lineup.”

Outfielder Luis Tinoco is scheduled to undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury that has kept him from playing in the outfield since the second day of spring training. Playing only designated hitter, Tinoco entered Friday night’s game with a .103 batting average. . . . Right-handed pitcher Jeff Farnsworth pitched without pain at extended spring training on Thursday, said JetHawk pitching coach Jim Slaton. If Farnsworth is fine after another outing, either Monday or Tuesday, he would be able to join the JetHawks after that.

Around the Leagues

Catcher Casey Snow, a Crespi High graduate, couldn’t have found himself with a much better assignment in the Dodger organization.

Not only did Snow skip two levels in the organization to play close to home at Class-A San Bernardino, but he is managed by former major-league catcher Del Crandall.

“It’s great,” Snow said before starting Thursday night against the JetHawks. “I’ve been learning a lot. About pitch calling. Everything.”

Crandall said Snow, a 15th-round pick last June out of Long Beach State, is more advanced defensively than offensively.

“I was amazed [in spring training] at how much progress he has made with his throwing,” Crandall said.

Snow hit .269 last season at rookie-level Great Falls, Mont., but after going hitless in three at-bats Thursday, he was off to a one-for-12 start this season.
