Waves Fall in Five in Key Match at BYU

Brigham Young beat Pepperdine, 15-11, 15-12, 13-15, 15-17, 16-14, in a crucial Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match on Friday at BYU.

George Roumain had 42 kills and 20 digs for the fifth-ranked Waves (18-7, 13-5 in MPSF play), who must beat the fourth-ranked Cougars (18-5, 13-5) in the regular-season finale today to keep alive hopes of hosting a first-round MPSF tournament match next Saturday.

Kevin Barnett had 45 kills for Pepperdine.

Former Highland High standout Ryan Millar had 48 kills for the Cougars and hit .414.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 8, San Francisco 0--The top-seeded Waves (18-6) dominated the Dons (1-22) in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships at Pepperdine. Simon Aspelin, Michael Jessup, Brad Sceney, Troy Budgen, Chris Hill and Aron Breziner won in straight sets at Nos. 1-7 singles. Pepperdine meets St. Mary’s (9-12) today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 9, San Francisco 0--The Waves won 96 of 97 games in a first-round match of the WCC Championships at Pepperdine, ending the season for San Francisco (0-15). Top-seeded Pepperdine (14-7) faces No. 4 St. Mary’s in a second-round match today.

BASEBALL

Pepperdine 11, St. Mary’s 8--Mark Lopez had three hits, including a solo home run, and three runs batted in to lead Pepperdine (25-16, 12-1) in a WCC game at St. Mary’s.

Pepperdine’s leadoff batter, Rob Reid, had two hits, two walks and scored four runs. Left-hander Randy Wolf (7-2) pitched eight innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out nine.

Cal Lutheran 9, Caltech 0--Scott Poletto pitched five hitless innings and struck out five in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Steve Fjeldseth, Rich Holmes and Ruben Torres became the third, fourth and fifth players in Kingsmen (23-7, 12-1) history to play nine positions in one game.
