Gooden, Strawberry on Disabled List
The New York Yankees put Darryl Strawberry, hitless in 14 at-bats this season, and Dwight Gooden, scheduled to have hernia surgery, on the 15-day disabled list Friday.
To take their places on the roster, the Yankees activated outfielder Tim Raines and pitcher Ramiro Mendoza.
Strawberry had fluid in his left knee drained before the game against Oakland on Friday and reentered the Yankees’ clubhouse an hour before the game with his knee heavily wrapped.
Gooden, who has been bothered by what was first believed to be an abdominal strain, decided earlier this week to have surgery on a small hernia discovered in a recent examination.
Gooden, who won his only start this season, will have surgery Monday.

Baseball’s players’ association is pushing for a meeting between Baltimore’s Roberto Alomar and umpire John Hirschbeck to try to put their confrontation last September behind them.
Hirschbeck is scheduled to work the Orioles’ game at Camden Yards against the Chicago White Sox on April 22, marking the first time he and Alomar have been on the same diamond since the spitting incident.

The Minnesota Twins put outfielder Marty Cordova on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, because of an injured left foot. They recalled outfielder Chris Latham from triple-A Salt Lake City to replace Cordova.
