Can Buena Make the Cut With Volleyball Coach?

Share

Buena High is making some noise in the Channel League, which could cost boys’ volleyball Coach Peter Fox his hair.

Fox told his players they could shave his head if they make the playoffs, and, as extra incentive, they can also shave his goatee with a first-place finish.

The Bulldogs are 4-2 in league--good for third place--and middle blocker Matt Prosser has started to sharpen his shears.

“We could do it one day at lunch out in the quad, so everybody can see,” said Prosser, who has signed a letter of intent with Long Beach State.

Quick learner: Manuel Flores is growing up in a hurry.

Already the first freshman to play varsity baseball at Poly High, Flores, 6 feet, 170 pounds and growing, is batting .370 and leads the Parrots (9-8) with 17 hits.

“He’s gonna be something else,” Poly Coach Chuck Schwal said. “Right now, he’s playing right field, but he can play anywhere.”

Tee ‘em up: The Taft High booster club’s 15th annual Lambert/O’Connor golf tournament to benefit school athletics and other programs will be held May 12 at Braemar Country Club in Reseda.
