Pierce Plays Palomar Tuesday in Men’s Volleyball Regional

Pierce College will face Palomar at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the first match of a four-team Southern California men’s volleyball regional at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

A victory would advance the Brahmas (15-3) to a 7 p.m. match against the winner of the 1 p.m. match between Orange Coast (14-2) and Santa Barbara (9-9).

The winner of the evening match qualifies for the state championships Friday and next Saturday at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.

Pierce finished in second place behind Long Beach in the South Coast Conference. Palomar is 12-7.

The Brahmas won state titles in 1986, 1988 and 1992.

New coach: Brian Haloossim has been named boys’ basketball coach at Campbell Hall.

Haloossim, an assistant with the Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team, will guide the Vikings beginning in the fall. Haloossim, a graduate of Beverly Hills High and UCLA, was an assistant at Palisades High before coming to Northridge.

Diving title: Buena High junior Troy Dumais battled from fourth place to retain the men’s one-meter springboard title in the U.S. Spring National Diving Championships at Auburn, Ala.

The come-from-behind victory was Dumais’ third career national title.

He was fourth after the first round and third after the second. On the third of six dives, he took a lead that he held thereafter.

Dumais, 17, scored 63.00 points on his final dive for an event total of 403.80. He beat runner-up P.J. Bogart by 2.1 points.

Duamis brother, Justin, a senior at Buena, finished 12th with 274.50 points.

World swimming: Jennifer Parmenter of L.A. Baptist High placed seventh in the 800-meter freestyle at the World Short Course Championships in Gothenberg, Sweden.

She timed 8:34.74, more than eight seconds behind winner Natasha Bowron of Australia.
