Long Beach State Men Tumble in Volleyball Tournament

Long Beach State couldn’t get past UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball tournament for the second consecutive year, losing, 15-8, 15-5, 15-11, Saturday at the Pyramid.

The 49ers (19-10) finished with a hitting percentage of only .184, compared to .369 for UC Santa Barbara (17-8). Geoff Cryst led Long Beach with 26 kills and Gaby Amar had 13.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 2-1, Cal Baptist 1-7 (1st game, 8)--Cal Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth in the first game, but RBI singles from Chrissy Vega and Dawn Davidson gave Southern California College the victory.

In the second game, SCC outhit Cal Baptist, 10-5, but Cal Baptist capitalized on five Vanguard errors to score five unearned runs.

In the Long Beach Invitational track and field meet:

Senior wins javelin--Walt Senior of Long Beach State won the javelin with a toss of 203 feet 11 inches and Bryan Gartin was seventh (146-2). Long Beach State’s Aaron Junta captured third place in the triple jump with a mark of 46-7 1/4.

Mary Lou Badillo of Long Beach State won the pole vault, clearing 12-1, and Tosca Galatti finished fourth in the hammer throw (142-11) for the 49ers.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 2-10 Utah State 0-2 (2nd game, 6 rain)--Christy Tucker was seven for seven on the day with two doubles, a triple, three runs and three RBIs for Long Beach State, which remained tied for first with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
