Moorpark Brush Fire Blamed on Sparks From Power Line

Share

A wind-driven brush fire that scorched five to 10 acres in a hilly Moorpark neighborhood Monday evening alarmed residents but stayed clear of houses and other structures.

The fire, reported about 6:45 p.m., was started by sparks from power lines arcing in the strong winds that blew through the region, county fire officials said. Two hours later, firefighters had the blaze 70% contained.

At least 18 firetrucks were dispatched to the fire near Hilburn Court, joined by helicopters, bulldozers, and 11 Ventura County Sheriff’s Department patrol cars sent for traffic control.

Although the fire never directly threatened homes in the neighborhood, the smells and sounds of the fire made some residents nervous.

“I had no clue it was so close until I just looked out the window,” said Diane Sautman, a 15-year resident of the area. “We’ve been smelling the smoke for a while and hearing the helicopters, but no one has told us to evacuate, so we’re staying put for now.”

Winds gusted to about 20 mph in the evening, helping spread the fire. But the Ventura County Fire Department, on alert since declaring the start of the 1997 fire season April 15, responded to the blaze with full force.

There were no injuries.
