The Foothill Swim Games begin today with the girls’ preliminaries at 3 p.m. at Foothill High. The boys’ prelims are 3 p.m. Friday. Finals begin 9 a.m. Saturday. Olympian Amanda Beard, who recently returned from Sweden where she competed in the Short Course World Championships, should handle all challengers in the 100 breaststroke. However, the 200 individual medley could be another matter for the Irvine sophomore with strong competition expected from Laguna Hills freshman Shauna Barnard. Beard edged Barnard this season.

Saturday, Mission Viejo hosts an invitational beginning at 8 a.m. at Marguerite Recreational Pool in Mission Viejo.
