Late Runs Propel Wichita State Past Long Beach State

Wichita State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Long Beach State, 6-5, in baseball Wednesday at Wichita.

It was Wichita State’s second straight victory. The loss is the 49ers’ fifth in six games.

Thirteenth-ranked Wichita State (36-9) scored the eighth-inning runs on a double and three singles off 49er closer Ara Petrosian (4-2).

Long Beach State (27-18) took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on an error and two infield hits, including an RBI single by Izzy Gonzalez.

Jaron Madison was two for three with two RBIs and Gonzalez was two for five with a double and three RBIs for the 16th-ranked 49ers.

Zach Sorensen and Pat Magness were two for four with a double for Wichita State.

In other nonconference baseball:

Concordia 4, Chapman 3 (10)--Freshman Derek Patterson had an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning for Concordia (19-23).

Matt France was two for four with two RBIs and Jeff Stodgel was two for four with a run for the Eagles.

Mike Konkol was two for four with a double and an RBI for Chapman (23-11). Rob O’Brien and Mike Thornton each had RBIs for the Panthers.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 6-5, UC Santa Barbara 2-0--Tiffany Blood had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Amanda Adams had three RBIs, including a home run, in the doubleheader sweep for the visiting 49ers (37-16-1, 18-8).

Tammy Dietrich improved to 19-9 in the first game and Amy Miner pitched a four-hitter in the second game for Long Beach.
