Orange Upsets Canyon in Girls’ Swimming

Orange won nine of 11 events and upset 10th-ranked Canyon, 88-82, in a Century League girls’ swim meet Wednesday at Canyon.

Josephina Kim placed first in the 500 freestyle (5 minutes 45.54 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:01.95), Shannon Flahive won the 200 individual medley (2:14.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.96), and Alyson Edoff finished first in the 100 (53.6) and 200 freestyles (1:56.66) for the Panthers.

Earlier this season, Orange (2-2 in league) won nine of 11 events against fifth-ranked Villa Park, but the Panthers were narrowly defeated in that meet.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 94, El Toro 76--Santa Margarita was able to get some crucial second- and third-place finishes to hold off unranked El Toro. Dominque Rash was a double winner for Santa Margarita, taking the 200 individual medley (2:15.42) and the 100 freestyle (56.28). Teammate Siobhan Herlihy also won two events, the 200 (2:03.58) and 500 freestyles (5:25.56.

Sophomores Lara Reaves and Ashley Pyka were the only winners for El Toro, with Reaves winning two events and Pyka one.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 111.5, Capistrano Valley 58.5--Jessica Klenner and Lindsey Hartman were double winners for fourth-ranked Mission Viejo. Klenner won the 200 IM (2:17.70) and 100 free (55.70) and Hartman took the 50 free (25.89) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.98). Carly Cox pulled off the distance double for the Cougars, winning the 200 free (1:58.23) and the 500 free (5:19.87).

In Empire League boys’ swimming:

El Dorado 101, Katella 69--Brian Malich won the 200 individual medley (2:25) and the 100 butterfly (56.31) for El Dorado (7-1, 4-0). John Jo won the 100 freestyle (48.62) and the 100 backstroke (57.5) for the Golden Hawks.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 107, El Toro 63--Philippe Demers of Santa Margarita, ranked third in the county, swam a county best in the 200 freestyle (1:41.59), eclipsing the previous best time by more than three seconds. He also won the 50 free in 20.93.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 108.5, Capistrano Valley 61.5--Matt Feeney and Slawomir Richter swept the freestyle events for the Diablos, the top-ranked team in the county. Feeney won the 50 free (23.02) and 100 free (50.56), and Richter won the 200 free (1:52.86) and the 500 free (4:50.98). Nate Cooke won the 200 individual medley (2:09.38) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.41) for the seventh-ranked Cougars.

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 413, Huntington Beach 415--The seventh-ranked Griffins (12-1, 5-0) overcame gusty winds for the two-stroke win over the eighth-ranked Oilers (11-3, 3-2) at SeaCliff Country Club.

In nonleague golf:

Corona del Mar 197, Estancia 232--Innes MacDonald was the medalist with a three-over 38 at Newport Beach Country Club for Corona del Mar (12-2).

Villa Park 395, El Toro 417--Geoff Cohn and Mark Hewlett each shot four-over-par 76 to lead the Spartans (11-1), ranked third in the county, to the victory over the Chargers.

In Golden West League softball:

Ocean View 2, Tustin 0--Lovieanne Jung led off the sixth inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball and Leah Gulla scored on an RBI single by Cara Vanderhook in a two-run inning for Ocean View (10-8, 3-0).

Rosary 16, Saddleback 0 (5, mercy)--Christy Ledford (10-5) pitched a perfect game, striking out five for Rosary (15-1, 2-1). Natalie Golda was four for four with four RBIs and three runs and Marissa Perez was three for four with two RBIs and two runs for the Royals.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 11, Newport Harbor 1 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Edel Leyden hit a grand slam and Katy Morrison also homered for host Irvine (14-6, 3-0).

Woodbridge 7, Santa Margarita 0--Nichole Thompson had three hits and scored three runs and Christy Robitaille (15-2) threw a one-hitter and struck out 10 as the third-ranked Warriors (22-2, 3-0) beat the seventh-ranked Eagles (12-6-1, 1-2). Lizzie Lemire added a two-run home run for the winners.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 8, Trabuco Hills 0--Tia Bollinger (8-2) pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, and Shealee Dunavan had a three-run homer in the third inning for fourth-ranked Mater Dei (15-3, 3-0).

San Clemente 2, Capistrano Valley 0--The Tritons (11-7, 3-0) scored twice in the top of the seventh to edge the Cougars (5-11-1, 0-3). Tara Frazer led off the frame with a single, advanced on two walks, and scored the winning run on a passed ball. San Clemente faces Mater Dei in a first-place showdown tomorrow.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Bolsa Grande 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--The Matadors (12-2, 8-0) extended their winning streak to 12 straight matches with the 15-6, 15-6, 15-13 victory over the Vaqueros. Jeff Aichelman had 15 kills to lead Bolsa Grande.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 3, Santa Ana 2--Alvin Magcasi had 22 kills and Hai Nguyen contributed nine for Saddleback (7-4, 2-3), which rallied for a 15-17, 15-5, 13-15, 15-7, 15-7 victory. Velo Lualemaga had 14 kills to lead Santa Ana.

Tustin 3, Westminster 0--The Tillers (10-1, 6-0) remain undefeated in league play after cruising past the Lions, 15-2, 15-5, 15-11. Tustin is 6-8, 1-5.
