Standouts Expected to Play in All-Star Game

Some of the Southland’s top seniors, including many from Orange County, are expected to participate in the Double Pump Classic all-star basketball games today at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Kevin Augustine, David Castleton, Tom Lippold and Mike Vukovich of Mater Dei High will play in the boys’ game, scheduled to start at approximately 7 p.m. Schea Cotton of Bellflower St. John Bosco will join his former Mater Dei teammates in the game, as will Woodbridge’s Brandon Beeson. Mater Dei’s Gary McKnight will coach one of the teams.

Woodbridge’s Krissy Duperron and Ocean View’s Jennifer Tuiolosega will play in the girls’ game, preceding the boys’ game at 5 p.m. Both games will be televised by Fox Sports West 2.

Jorge Valenzuela, Marina High girls’ soccer coach, has resigned for personal reasons, the school announced.

Dianne Pulido, a 5-foot 10-inch forward at Orange Coast College, will play basketball at Chapman next season.

Pulido, who attended Newport Harbor High, averaged 20.2 points as a sophomore and was selected the Orange Empire Conference’s player of the year. Pulido also averaged seven rebounds for Orange Coast (20-11).

Mandy Jacques, a guard from North Idaho College, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Long Beach State. Jacques (5 feet 6) averaged 10.5 points, 4.3 assists and 2.9 steals for North Idaho.

John Mallinger signed with the Long Beach men’s golf team. Mallinger, currently at Escondido High in San Diego County, has won four tournaments in the last three years and was an all-league selection this season.

An auction and dinner benefiting the Long Beach Athletic Assn.’s scholarship fund is scheduled June 28 at 5 p.m. at the Pyramid.
