Ashton Has Strong Finish, Leads Cypress Past Western

Paul Ashton had key kills in the fifth game to give Cypress a victory over Western in an Empire League boys’ volleyball match Friday.

Ashton finished with 23 kills for visiting Cypress, which won 13-15, 15-3, 9-15, 15-10, 15-11. Cypress improved to 9-4, 7-3.

In other Empire League matches:

El Dorado 3, Loara 0--Matt Peacock had 10 kills for El Dorado (15-2, 10-0), which won, 15-9, 15-7, 17-15.

Valencia 3, Kennedy 0--B.J. Smith had 18 kills and Wasil Aqil had 13 for Valencia (13-6, 9-2), which won, 15-5, 15-9, 15-10, and clinched second place in league. Bahkta Rupesh had 10 kills for Kennedy (2-13, 2-9).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 2--Scott Ogilvie had 24 kills to lead La Quinta (9-5, 7-3), which won, 6-15, 15-9, 15-17, 15-11, 15-7. Dan Onofre and Josh Hall each had 21 kills for Garden Grove (6-7, 6-4).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 1--Kevin Nimmons had 17 kills and O’Niel Hopson had 12 kills as Ocean View defeated Westminster, 15-9, 15-2, 10-15, 15-2. Scott Tanner had 40 assists for Ocean View (10-3, 7-2).

Scott Tau had 10 kills for Westminster (7-10, 2-7).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 3, Whittier Christian 0--Ryan Young had 12 kills to lead Calvary Chapel (9-3, 8-0), which won, 15-8, 15-9, 15-7.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 3, Costa Mesa 0--Danny Peykoff and John Chang each had nine kills in a victory for University (9-5, 5-3), 15-11, 15-11, 15-13. Paul Korc had 35 assists for the Trojans.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 3, Irvine 0--Matt Jameson and Adam Hearlson each had 12 kills and Dana Mesenbrink had 10 for fifth-ranked Newport Harbor (9-5, 6-2), which won, 15-3, 15-4, 16-14.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, San Clemente 0--Ryan Thurlow had 15 kills as Capistrano Valley defeated San Clemente, 15-6, 15-13, 15-6. Jay Monson had 37 assists for the Cougars (13-1, 8-0).

Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 1--Jim Polster had 17 kills for Dana Hills (8-6, 6-2), which won, 15-12, 15-8, 8-15, 15-7. James Murphy had 26 kills for Mission Viejo (9-7, 4-4).

Mater Dei 3, Trabuco Hills 1--Steve Almaguer had 13 kills in a victory for Mater Dei (7-7, 3-5), 15-5, 8-15, 15-3, 15-5. Ryan Nichols had 13 kills for Trabuco Hills (0-14, 0-8).
