White, Reimer Lift Brea Olinda to Third Place

Oliver White of Brea Olinda finished first in the 100-yard backstroke and second in the 100 butterfly at the Southern Section Division III swimming championships Saturday at Belmont Plaza Pool.

White’s performances, along with teammate Brent Reimer’s victory in the 50 freestyle, helped the Wildcats finish third in the team competition.

Brea Olinda also earned valuable points with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:14.87. Palm Desert, which edged Paso Robles for the team title, won that event with a time of 3:13.56.

Calvary Chapel was fifth in the boys’ team competition after winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.36, which was .63 better than second-place Palm Desert.

The Eagles’ depth showed as they placed swimmers among the top eight in five events. Johan Vonholst was the top individual performer for Calvary Chapel, finishing fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.33) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (49.67).

Pacifica’s Jeff Maddox had the other top individual performance among county swimmers, winning the 200 individual medley (1:55.11) and finishing second in the 500 freestyle (4:39.49). Maddox equaled White’s top individual combined score of 37.0.

In the girls’ competition, Calvary Chapel’s Kelly Stewart was one of the few bright spots for county swimmers. Stewart finished third in the 50 freestyle (24.50) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (54.4).

The Eagles were tied for 24th in the team standings. Cathedral City and Jurupa Valley had the top score of 158.

Cathedral City broke its Division III record in the 200 freestyle with a time 1:39.68, which was .91 seconds better than the previous mark set this season.

Temple City’s Sarah Baham broke a 14-year-old record in the 100 butterfly by .26 when she completed the event in 55.89.
