Kim Lester has been hired as the women’s volleyball coach at Saddleback College, school officials said. Lester was an assistant volleyball and softball coach at Southwestern College the last three seasons. She replaces Yvette Ybarra, now the girls’ coach at Costa Mesa High.

Sheryl Anderson is one of five members of the Rancho Santiago softball team to have accepted scholarship offers, Coach Kim Nutter said.

Anderson, the 1996 and 1997 conference pitcher of the year and an all-state selection, will attend Oklahoma State.

The other four include Monica Chavarria (Marshall), Remy Amaro and Cari Remmel (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and Tracy Wilkinson (San Francisco State).

Sean Melendez, an All-Southern Section soccer selection from Servite, has signed to play at Sacramento State, Coach Mike Gwaltney said.

Concordia has signed 6-foot-4 guard Charles Nixon, from Moberly (Mo.) College, to play basketball next season, men’s Coach Greg Marshall announced. Nixon, a graduate of Rialto High, spent his first college year at Victorville College. He averaged 10 points for Moberly (18-12) last season.

Deanna Mays, assistant softball coach at Long Beach State the last two years, has been named assistant coach of the Notre Dame softball team, according to Fighting Irish Coach Liz Miller. Mays worked with the 49er pitching staff, which had a 1.35 ERA in 1997 and a 1.40 ERA in 1996.
