Buffalo Bill defensive end Bruce Smith still doesn’t have a new contract.

Smith’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, left Buffalo Tuesday after failing to agree on a new deal. Smith, on the final year of a contract that will pay him $2.2 million this year, has been seeking more than the $22-million, five-year deal he already has rejected.

The Bills released linebacker Mark Maddox, who started 14 games last season, and defensive lineman Mark Gunn.

Oakland Raider center Curtis Whitley admits in a new book that he used crystal methamphetamine while he was with the Carolina Panthers.

“I’m a wild child. I’ve done some bad things,” said Whitley, released by the Panthers before camp and signed by Oakland.

Whitley’s comments were published in “Year of the Cat.”

In other news, former Houston Oiler John Henry Mills was signed by the Raiders to shore up the special teams unit and back up at linebacker. He may also see time at fullback.

Potts was suspended by the NFL all of last season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. . . . Hobbled by injuries all preseason, the San Diego Chargers got a break when quarterback Stan Humphries, who suffered an ankle injury in a weekend exhibition game, participated in workouts with the Arizona Cardinals at Flagstaff, Ariz. . . . Joe Nedney, the NFL’s worst field goal kicker last season, was waived by the Miami Dolphins. Nedney is being replaced by Olindo Mare, who grew up in South Florida, went to college at Syracuse and becomes the Dolphins’ third kicker in as many seasons. . . . Steeler reserve linebacker Carlos Emmons’ sport utility vehicle flipped during an accident early Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Emmons, 23, was treated at a hospital and released. Police said the results of a blood-alcohol test will not be available for about 10 days.
