Ken Stanley, who guided the Pierce College men’s volleyball team to three state championships since launching the program in 1976, has resigned.

Stanley, 58, who began coaching at Pierce in 1964 as a basketball assistant, said he is considering retiring from teaching after the coming school year. Turhan Douglas, a member of the Brahmas’ 1988 state championship team and an assistant to Stanley last season, has been selected as a replacement.

“”When you coach and you’re a full-time instructor, it’s a lot of time,” Stanley said. “But I accepted that I’ve tried to do the best job I could.”

Stanley led Pierce to the state Final Four nine times and the title match six times. The Brahmas won titles in 1986, ’88 and ’92.

Kevin Galbraith, men’s track and field coach at Valley College for the past two seasons, has resigned from that position.

Galbraith coached the men’s cross-country team at Mission College for two years before it was canceled because of budget constraints.
