Vigilante update--Mission Viejo received some of its best pitching of the season during its three-game series with the Heat last week at home. Mike Smith threw 140 pitches in the series opener, a 10-inning, 5-2 loss in which he gave up just two earned runs. Paul Anderson came through with a complete-game performance in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory, and Steve Ehler followed with a one-hit, 3-0 victory Wednesday. However, Mission Viejo has now dropped two consecutive games after winning three in a row.
Heat update--Chico has come a long way since its five-game losing streak in late July that put its second-half record at 5-9. The Heat had won 15 of its last 22 games going into Saturday night’s game against last-place Salinas, and was two games behind first-place Sonoma County with nine games left on the schedule.
