Pepperdine Wins Water Polo Title
Andy Bruininga scored with 44 seconds to play in the second overtime Sunday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to give Pepperdine an 8-7 win over USC for the Waves’ first NCAA water polo championship.
Pepperdine (25-3) took a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter, but Simun Cimerman’s goal with six seconds to play in regulation brought USC (21-7) back to a 6-6 tie.
The Trojans, ranked No. 1 going into the tournament, lost in the championship game for the sixth time overall and fourth time in five seasons. They have played in 15 NCAA championship tournaments without winning.
