Big Second Half Sends Burroughs to Semifinal

Burroughs High scored twice in the first 14 minutes of the second half and held on to defeat St. Francis, 3-1, in a quarterfinal game of the Burroughs boys’ soccer tournament Friday night at Burroughs.

Gary Guenther stole the ball at midfield and drilled a 35-yard shot over St. Francis goalie Drew Sams 12 minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Two minutes later, Robbie Honicky scored on a free kick from 25 yards.

Burroughs (2-0-2) plays Servite or La Salle in a semifinal at 1:30 p.m. today.

Newbury Park 4, Alemany 1--Greg Greshler scored two second-half goals for the Panthers (2-1-1) in a consolation game at Alemany.

Chatsworth 5, Cleveland 0--The Chancellors (3-1-2, 1-1-2 in conference play) scored all five goals in the first 20 minutes in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Birmingham 3, Kennedy 1--Walter Aparicio had two goals for the host Braves (6-0, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Paraclete 2, St. Bonaventure 1--Matt Hickman scored the game-winner on an assist from Pat Hauge in the 62nd minute for the Spirits (1-2-1) in a nonleague game in Lancaster.

Village Christian 3, Brentwood 0--Victor Valencia, Saro Amirian and Ryan Donnelly each had a goal and an assist for the Crusaders (3-0-1) in a nonleague game at Village Christian.

Westlake 3, Oak Park 0--Jason Cook scored two goals for the Warriors (2-1) in a nonleague game at Oak Park.

Rio Mesa 6, Chaminade 1--David Cervantes scored twice for the Spartans (3-0) in the Calabasas tournament.
