The Royal High boys’ soccer team surrendered a goal 18 minutes into overtime Monday night and lost to Anaheim Servite, 1-0, in the championship game of the Burroughs tournament at Burroughs.
Servite defender Brian Murphy volleyed in a Royal clearing attempt from 20 yards to give the Friars (7-0) the title. For Royal (3-1), senior goalkeeper Josh Montgomery made 10 saves and was named all-tournament after allowing one goal in more than 250 minutes.
“Our guys were crying and upset we lost, but I told them a playoff-caliber game this early is great for us,” said Royal Coach Kevin Corley, whose team is the defending Southern Section Division III champion. “People remember what you do in March, not December.”
In the third-place game:
Burroughs 4, Crespi 1--Stergios Economos, Brian Criscuolo, Miguel Meneses and Genghis Hernandez scored to lift the Indians (3-1-2) and Coach Mike Kodama past the Celts (3-2) and his brother, Coach Rob Kodama.
