Hardeman’s Three-Pointer Helps Irvine Advance to Title Game

Matt Hardeman hit a three-pointer with 43 seconds remaining to help advance Irvine to the championship game with a 56-53 victory over Fountain Valley in the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament.

With the victory, Irvine advances to the final for the first time since 1992. The Vaqueros will face Woodbridge at 7 tonight.

Chris Ferguson had 18 points for Irvine (6-2). Hardeman finished with 11. Ryan Moreau and Brad Keenan each scored 13 for Fountain Valley.

In the other semifinal game:

Woodbridge 58, Oceanside 53--Woodbridge trailed, 47-40, early in the fourth quarter, then went on a 12-0 run, holding Oceanside without a field goal for 6 minutes 54 seconds.

Scott Barlow and Jordan Roker each scored 15 points for Woodbridge (5-4).

In other tournament games:

Capistrano Valley 62, Estancia 48--Mike Stowell scored 20 points to lead Capistrano Valley (6-2) in the consolation game. Teammate Josh Garrett added 17 points. Sam Nelson led Estancia with 14 points.

Dana Hills 76, Torrance 53--Larry Page led Dana Hills with 16 points. The Dolphins led, 36-29, at halftime.

Ontario 79, Kennedy 58--Tony Jimmerson scored 15 points for Kennedy and Ricky Crowder added 12. The Fighting Irish are 4-5.

Pomona 79, Los Amigos 42--Jerry Green had 15 points for Pomona, which led, 40-24, at the half. Isaac Hurtado led Los Amigos with 11 points in the consolation game.

In the Avalon tournament:

Anaheim 87, Yermo Silver Valley 48--Tru Nguyen and Jesus Salcedo each scored 23 points and Shu Todoroki added 17 and 12 assists for Anaheim (5-5).

In the La Costa Canyon basketball tournament:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 84, Escondido 37--T.J. Williams had 14 points and seven assists and Dekker McKeever had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Santa Margarita (6-0) in the first-round game.

In the Lake Highland (Fla.) Classic:

Edison 62, Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles 59--Four players scored in double figures for Edison, including reserve Steven Shwam, who led the Chargers with 14. Edison (5-2) will play Orlando (Fla.) Woodward in today’s final.

In the Sonora Cage Classic:

Tustin 63, El Toro 49--Tustin broke open a 41-41 tie at the end of the third quarter, outscoring El Toro, 22-8, in the fourth quarter. Tustin (9-0) was led by Kenny Crabb with 12 points. Cameron Jackson and Willie Knight each added 11. Nick Robertson led El Toro (7-2) with 13 points.

No. 4 Sonora 79, Cypress 68--Jeff Berokoff scored 17 of his 32 points in the third quarter, as Sonora (8-2) outscored Cypress, 30-9, to take a 27-point lead into the fourth quarter. Berokoff also hit three three-pointers and made 11 of 14 free throws. Cypress was led by Travis Weaver with 24 points in the fifth-place game.

In the Trabuco Hills tournament:

Costa Mesa 61, Central Valley 47--James Bryant had 22 points, 22 rebounds, four steals and two blocks to lead Costa Mesa (2-4). John Payne also contributed with 11 points.

Sacramento Rocklin 82, Trabuco Hills 76 (3 OT)--Despite it being batted by a defender, Chris Keck hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in double overtime to send the game into its third overtime, when Trabuco Hills (4-3) managed only one point. The score was tied 53-53 at the end of regulation and 75-75 after the second overtime.

Rocklin’s Leo Cravey led all scorers with 33 points. Ryan Webster, who dislocated his shoulder in the second overtime, led the Mustangs with 22 points and Brandon Martin added 19.

In the Troy tournament:

La Puente Bishop Amat 85, Pacifica 77--Jason Fmoot and Brian Church led Bishop Amat with 25 and 23 points, respectively. Five players fouled out for Pacifica, including Jeff Swan, who had a game-high 16 points.

Troy 76, Corona del Mar 40--Jerry Inzunza scored 25 points and Troy made 21 of 25 free throws. Corona del Mar (3-5) was 10 for 20 at the free-throw line.

Pico Rivera El Rancho 49, Sunny Hills 48--Justin Weaver hit a shot after the buzzer, as Sunny Hills (4-5) fell in the consolation game. Bim Okunrinboye led all scorers with 23 points for the Lancers (4-5), who led, 32-26, at the half. Eric Sanchez scored 15 points for El Rancho (8-2).

Whittier Christian 74, La Verne Damien 60--Whittier Christian’s Jon Stoa scored the second-highest point total in school history, 41, after hitting 13 of 21 field-goal attempts. Stoa also made 10 of 13 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and made five of nine three-point attempts for the Heralds (5-5) in the consolation game.

In nonleague basketball:

No. 7 Katella 67, Magnolia 54--Robert Abercrombie scored 13 of his 25 points in the first quarter as Katella (10-0) built a nine-point lead. Zamiro Bennem had 27 points to lead Magnolia (7-3).

Buena Park 66, Savanna 55--Nick Hankins scored 16 of his 28 points in the second half, including 12 on three-pointers, as Buena Park outscored visiting Savanna, 36-25. DeAndre Gibson contributed 17 points and 10 steals and Brian McDonald had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Coyotes (7-2).

El Modena 80, Brethren Christian 53--Nick Soderstrom scored 25 points and Mario Garcia added 24 for El Modena (5-3).

Foothill 63, Western 58--Larry Cambra scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half as Foothill (3-7) outscored visiting Western, 41-28. Cambra made five three-pointers.

Fullerton 51, Mission Viejo 50--Michael Bridgford blocked a shot with three seconds left in the game to preserve Fullerton’s nonleague victory. Mission Viejo led, 21-4, late in the first quarter, but Fullerton (4-6) came on strong in the second quarter, giving up only four points.

Riverside Notre Dame 51, Laguna Beach 49--Notre Dame (5-2) tipped in a shot at the buzzer for the victory. B.J. Jameson scored 17 points for Laguna Beach (8-3), which led by four at the half.
