Burroughs Rally Not Enough in Alaska Tournament, 60-53

The Burroughs High girls’ basketball team had a hard time adjusting to the long Alaska nights.

After spotting defending Alaska state champion Juneau Douglas an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter of a Juneau Douglas pool-play game Saturday, the Indians launched a comeback effort that just fell short, 60-53.

JoAnna Garrick had 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots for Burroughs (8-3), ranked eighth in the region by The Times.

Chantal Jimenez contributed 19 points for the Indians, who trailed 15-4, at the end of the first quarter and had pulled within two points, 51-49, with 1:30 remaining.

Caroline Gruening scored 23 for Douglas.

The visit does not get any easier for Burroughs, which will next face Lakeside (Wash.), winners of five state titles in 11 years.

Crescenta Valley 61, Palmdale 26--With three starters seeing limited action because of the flu, Crescenta Valley (8-1) showed why it is ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times in a quarterfinal matchup in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Elizabeth Settle, one of the afflicted players, scored 13 points while standout Michelle Greco collected nine points and 10 rebounds only playing in the first half. Sinnamonn Garrett was held to four points.

Kristie Umemoto and Tara Gregory picked up the slack. Umemoto scored 11 points while Gregory contributed 10 points and seven steals.

North Hollywood 55, Oxnard 32--Markia Derby scored 17 points, Tashean Thomas 16 and Claudia Villa added 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Huskies (11-0) in a first-round game in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Flintridge Sacred Heart 49, San Gabriel Mission 37--Danielle Dal Ponte had 30 points and seven rebounds for the Tologs (2-5) in a nonleague game at St. Francis High.

Valencia 46, Gabrielino 27--Alissa McMurrin had 11 points and seven rebounds and Kesha Kelso added 10 points for the Vikings (8-3) in pool play of the Glendora tournament at Glendora High.

Valencia will play Glendora in a semifinal Monday at 7:30 p.m..

BOYS

North Hollywood 71, Venice 62--Keron Wilkerson had 26 points and Dejon Lee had 17 for the Huskies (8-5) in a quarterfinal game of the Eagle Rock tournament at Eagle Rock High.

Taft 75, Poly 66--Brandyn Fisher had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Amir Bar-Netzer scored 19 for the Toreadors (6-2) in an Eagle Rock tournament quarterfinal decided in overtime.

Harold Shevlin had 17 points and five steals for Taft, while Ellis Richardson and James Word each scored 19 for Poly.

Taft and North Hollywood will face off at 6:30 Monday in a semifinal game.

Bonanza 98, Canoga Park 57--Charles Harper and Jammie Harris scored eight points, with Harper grabbing nine rebounds for the Hunters in a Torrey Pines tournament consolation game.

Robert Gatling had 25 points and 14 rebounds for Bonanza, which outrebounded Canoga Park, 38-23.

Birmingham 94, Los Angeles C.E.S. 63--Stanley Fletcher had 33 points and 13 rebounds and Emmanuel Evans had 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Braves (7-4) in the first round of the Birmingham tournament at Birmingham High.

Fahim Hassankhail had five points and 10 assists for Birmingham, which plays Verdugo Hills Monday at 8:45 p.m. in the second round.

Monroe 66, Birmingham JV 32--Eric Bush scored 20 points for the Vikings in a first-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

Grant 72, Granada Hills 52--Gilbert Arenas had 30 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead Grant (7-5) in the opening round of the Birmingham tournament.

Scott Neumann scored 15 points for Granada Hills.

St. Francis 68, Flintridge Prep 37--Anthony La Velle had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Shawn Scranton had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Richard Fields added 12 points and nine assists for the Golden Knights (6-3) in a nonleague game at St. Francis High.

Moorpark 84, Bishop Diego 55--Keith Donahue scored 35 points and had six rebounds and three steals, and Kevin Lawrence added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Musketeers (10-3) in a pool-play game at the Santa Barbara tournament.

Oak Park 60, Oxnard 59--Greg Jones had 26 points and Zack Smith scored 17 for the Eagles (5-4) in a Santa Paula tournament semifinal.

Morro Bay 85, Hueneme 50--Dane Van Coops had 21 points and Pat Dzuba had 21 for Morro Bay (6-4) in a Santa Paula tournament semifinal. Robert Luna led Hueneme (4-4) with 15 points.
