Crescenta Valley Gives Canyon No Hope, 46-19

When Christy Umemoto sank a three-point shot for Crescenta Valley High five seconds into its Santa Clarita Shootout girls’ basketball semifinal game against Canyon, it signaled the demise of the Cowboys on Friday night.

The Falcons scored the first 12 points on their way to a 46-19 victory at College of the Canyons in Valencia.

Umemoto sank two more three-pointers and scored 13 points for Crescenta Valley.

Cheryl Grucelski, who had 14 points for the Cowboys, scored Canyon’s first basket with 12:10 left in the first half.

The Falcons responded with an 18-point run before Katie Rendich scored with 2:55 seconds left in the first half.

Sinnammon Garrett had eight points and eight rebounds for Crescenta Valley while Danielle Proctor and Elizabeth Settle each scored seven points.

Proctor made consecutive three-pointers during an eight-point second-half run by the Falcons.

Crescenta Valley will play Hart in the championship game tonight at 8.

Hart 50, North Hollywood 25--Melissa Harrison scored 12 of her 22 points in the first half for the Indians and Emily Reyna added 11 points.

Claudia Villa scored 10 points for the Huskies.

Quartz Hill 26, Paraclete 22--Nicole Williford had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Rebels.

Heather Lynde had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Spirits.

Paraclete center Christine Lambert did not score, missing nine free throws, but grabbed 17 rebounds.

Quartz Hill will play North Hollywood for third place at 6:45.

Canyon 43, Valencia 33--Keisha Jordan had 16 points for the Cowboys and Leanne Suenaka contributed 12 points.

Kesha Kelso scored nine points for the Vikings and Alicia McMurrin contributed seven.

Canyon will play Saugus today in a 4:15 consolation game.

Van Nuys East 11, Studio City North 3--Matt Cunningham went four for four with four runs batted for Van Nuys East (19-4).

Ryan Cowsill (6-0) and Chris Cross combined for a three-hitter.
