Full-Court Press Does the Trick

Relying on a relentless full-court press, the Crescenta Valley High girls’ basketball team defeated Hart, 38-31, Saturday night at College of the Canyons to win its third consecutive Santa Clarita Summer Shootout championship.

The Falcons were led by Sinnamonn Garrett with 15 points and Tara Gregory, the tournament’s most valuable player, with 13 points and four steals.

Hart’s Melissa Harrison scored a game-high 23 points.

Crescenta Valley employed the full-court press and closed the first half with an eight-point run to take a 19-11 lead.

“We were trying to wear down their guards with the press, and then fall into man [defense] in half court, with a heavy emphasis on the post [Harrison],” said Damian Scribner, Crescenta Valley’s coach.

The Falcons outscored Hart, 10-4, in the first five minutes of the second half.

North Hollywood 33, Quartz Hill 27--Ashley Fargeon scored 10 points and Claudia Villa added nine for North Hollywood in the third-place game.

Angelle Hill and Suelgey Kim each scored seven points for the Huskies. Shereen Green led Quartz Hill with eight points and Nicole Williford scored seven.

Simi Valley 32, Bell-Jeff 30--Elise Metcalf’s two free throws with 2:20 to play gave the Pioneers the lead for good, 28-26, in the consolation championship game.

Laura Lunsford made a three-point basket to give Bell-Jeff a 26-24 lead with about 6:00 to play.

Anne Marie Turpin led Simi Valley with 10 points. Stacy Cobb had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Bell-Jeff.

Canyon 48, Saugus 35--Janette Garcia scored 11 points and Inga Lin scored 10 for Canyon in a consolation game.

Lexi Phelps scored 13 points for Saugus.
