Harvard-Westlake in Avenging Mode

Two victories have given the Harvard-Westlake High boys’ water polo team a chance to avenge one of its few defeats.

Mike Crosby and Phil Spataru each scored three goals and the Wolverines defeated Central Section power Leyland High, 12-8, in the quarterfinals of the John Felix California Invitational on Friday at Lynbrook High near San Jose.

Harvard-Westlake beat Davis, 13-6, earlier in the day. Peter Hudnut scored three goals and Jason Malinsky and Spataru each added two goals.

The Wolverines (18-2) will play Long Beach Wilson in the semifinals at 9 a.m. today at Bellarmine Prep High. It will be the second meeting in a week between the teams. Wilson beat Harvard-Westlake, 15-7, in a nonleague game last Saturday.

Against Leyland, Harvard-Westlake got a key goal from driver David Frank in a four-goal second quarter that gave the Wolverines a 7-3 halftime lead.

Goalie Brendan Connolly made 13 saves against Leyland and had 12 saves against Davis.

In other boys’ water polo games:

La Canada 19, Arcadia 6--Brian Ahn scored three goals and Brandon Goode, Charles Change and Ben Jorgensen each added two for the Spartans (19-5) in a nonleague game at Arcadia.

Burroughs 24, Alhambra 0--Jason Falitz and Ryan Rittmiller each had five goals for the Indians (15-6, 4-1) in an Almont League game at Burroughs.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Northridge 1, Weber State 0--Heather Schou scored in the 36th minute to give the host Matadors (2-15, 1-3) an upset over the Wildcats (13-4-1, 2-2) in a Big Sky Conference game.

Ventura 3, Santa Barbara 0--Krista Janik scored her 19th goal in the final minute of the first half, followed by goals from Joy Barry in the 82nd minute and Fiona MacDonald in the 85th, and the host Pirates (18-2-1, 11-0-1) beat the Vaqueros (10-3-2, 8-3-2) in a Western State Conference game.

Moorpark 5, Glendale 1--Nikki Hagouel and Tiffany Tackett each scored two goals for the host Raiders (8-3-1) in a WSC game.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

USC Invitational--Pepperdine’s Andrea Trufasu won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.84 seconds and she was part of the 200 free relay team that finished second in 1:38.03 at the USC Invitational.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. St. Mary’s, 15-3, 15-6, 15-3--Karen Benkovsky had 10 kills and nine digs for the Waves (18-2, 7-1) in a West Coast Conference victory over the Gaels (6-16, 2-6) at Pepperdine.

Santa Barbara d. Moorpark, 15-12, 15-8, 15-3--Jolene Small had 11 kills, four aces and four blocks and Carrie Swartz had nine kills and six digs for the Raiders (12-2, 8-1) in a WSC match at Santa Barbara (13-2, 9-0) to determine first place.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Harvard-Westlake 10, Chaminade 8--Marissa Irvin and Stephanie Berg each swept three singles sets for the Wolverines (15-2, 12-0) in a Mission League match at the Northridge Tennis Club.
