Cleveland Rallies to Upset El Camino Real, 20-14

Cleveland High football Coach Joe Santellano expected the Cavaliers to compete for the City Section 3-A Division championship, but before their Northwest Valley Conference game against El Camino Real Friday afternoon, they had struggled.

The frustration ended, at least temporarily, when Justin Savitt scored on a 19-yard pass play from Larry Brown with 27 seconds remaining to give Cleveland a 20-14 upset victory against the Conquistadores at El Camino Real.

Savitt’s touchdown capped a six-play, 52-yard drive for the Cavaliers (2-6, 1-4 in conference play). The drive began after James Bethea recovered an onside kick following Brown’s seven-yard scoring run, which tied the game, 14-14.

“It was a matter of us executing and not doing stupid things,” Santellano said. “[Brown] only got better as the game went on.”

Brown, who did not play last week after missing practice, completed 13 of 25 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 55 yards in 10 carries, and got off a 64-yard punt in the second quarter.

Aaron Fredette completed 10 of 18 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown for El Camino Real (5-3, 2-3). Demond Daniels caught nine passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Quincy Wright rushed for 85 yards in 22 carries and scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter for the Conquistadores, who led, 14-6, at halftime.

El Camino Real has lost three of its last four games after starting the season 4-0.
