Two moderate earthquakes, magnitude 4.3 and 5.3, struck western Nevada early Sunday morning 47 miles northeast of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., officials said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the smaller quake at 12:37 a.m., followed by the magnitude 5.3 quake at 12:51 a.m. near this small town about 20 miles east of the state line.

“The entire building shook,” said Sharon Sumerau, a Nye County sheriff’s dispatcher in Tonopah, 27 miles north of the quakes midway between Las Vegas and Reno.

Sumerau said one caller told her the quakes were felt as far away as Yerington, Nev., 65 miles southeast of Reno.

Robbie Scott, an Esmerelda County sheriff’s dispatcher, said deputies there patrol the small mountain town of Silverpeak and neighboring Nivloc, but didn’t receive any reports from residents there about the quakes.
