In limbo: Angel Guerrero and Chris Rodriguez, who account for four starting positions on the Sylmar High football team, were held out last week against Monroe and have not been allowed to return to practice, Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman said.

“They didn’t make it to practice one day and the captains didn’t like their excuse,” Engilman said. “Until they rectify it with the captains, they’re off the team.”

Guerrero is a senior fullback-linebacker, Rodriguez, a two-way lineman.

Although Guerrero has made several appeals to Engilman, his coach said his hands are tied.

“Until they admit they made a real big mistake [to the team], they’re off the team,” Engilman said. “And it’s too bad because they’re good players.”

Tourism: The Pepperdine University Wave Invitational golf tournament has been added to the Rolex Collegiate Golf Tour.

The Collegiate Golf Tour is used to determine national rankings. Teams earn points based upon their finish in the events. Non-golf tour events are not used in national rankings. There are more than 200 official tour events.

The Pepperdine Invitational is Nov. 11-12 at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club near Mission Viejo.

Tee formation: The Southern Section will vote in January on adding girls’ golf as a fall sport, Southern Section Commissioner Dean Crowley said.

If approved, girls’ golf will start in September, 1998. Teams would be comprised of four players, with three individual scores counting toward the team score.

Girls who want to play must try out for the boys’ team. There is a Southern Section girls’ individual tournament, but no team events.
