Pacifica’s Two-Timing Proves Too Much for Santiago

Pacifica still appears to be searching for a No. 1 quarterback. But after a 12-3 victory over Santiago in a Garden Grove League game Friday at Bolsa Grande High, Mariner Coach Bill Craven may be satisfied with his two-quarterback option.

Brent Kirkland, who injured his throwing hand against Woodbridge in the first game of the season, replaced starter Matt Reis after a scoreless first quarter. With 3 minutes 5 seconds remaining in the half, Kirkland hit Jason Simpson on a slant pattern, and Simpson went 42 yards untouched for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead for Pacifica (5-2-2, 3-2).

Santiago (2-6-1, 1-3-1) cut the lead to 6-3 a minute later on a 23-yard field goal by Adrian Villicana. James Thomas’ 57-yard run set up the kick.

Kirkland and Reis each had a hand in the final touchdown, which came on a five-yard pass from Reis to Jon Dorenbos.

“Kirkland and Reis were head to head when we started the season,” Craven said. “And it still appears we don’t know who has the upper hand. They both throw the ball well and can run when given the opportunity.”

Kirkland was nine of 17 for 130 yards; Reis threw for 40 yards and ran for 17.
