TONIGHT’S GAME

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (0-1) at OREGON STATE (0-0), 7 p.m.--Porous defense and poor composure led to Northridge’s 97-91 loss at Arizona State on Sunday. The Sun Devils had numerous easy baskets inside and two Northridge players got technical fouls for arguing calls. However, Northridge led much of the second half behind a balanced, up-tempo attack. Mike O’Quinn, in his first Northridge game after transferring from Loyola Marymount, scored 26 points, and junior college transfer Greg Minor had 22. Freshman Brian Heinle had 14 points and nine rebounds. Heinle and freshman Carl Holmes went to high school in nearby Eugene. Bobby Braswell was an assistant at Oregon for four seasons before becoming the Northridge coach last season. Oregon State, 7-20 last season, is 13-41 in two seasons under Eddie Payne. Corey Benjamin, a 6-foot-6 guard from Fontana High, made the Pac-10 all-freshman team last season, averaging 14.9 points. Senior center Terrill Woods and sophomore guards Ron Grady and John-Blair Bickerstaff started more than half of last season’s games.
