Redlands Knocks Out Dolphins in 4th Quarter

Jose Corrales rushed for 224 yards and five touchdowns and Winston Ellison rushed for 204 yards to lead Redlands to a 43-29 victory over Dana Hills in the opening round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs at the University of Redlands Friday night.

Corrales’ fifth touchdown, a 31-yard run, broke a 29-29 tie with 8 minutes 18 seconds left in the game to give Redlands the lead.

Redlands wrapped up the win on a 15-yard fumble return by Ony Anyanwu with 5:57 left.

The game started on a sour note for the Dolphins when kick returner Gene Shibata suffered what Coach Scott Orloff believed to be a fractured tibia. Dana Hills covered 89 yards on four plays, three runs Julio Peraza for 49 yards and a 40-yard scoring pass from Jeremy Walker to Larry Page.

Redlands (9-2) bounced back on a 65-yard touchdown run by Corrales. A faked point-after kick on which Derrick Dial hit Corrales with a two-point conversion with 8:30 left in the first quarter gave the Terriers the lead.

Dana Hills (7-3-1) regained the lead on a four-yard touchdown pass from Walker to Tommy Cullinan. The pair also combined for a two-point conversion. The score was set up on a 63-yard interception return by Ryan Klink.

Redlands tied the score early in the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Corrales and a extra point by Kessler Heitritter. Dana Hills took a 22-15 lead with 2:11 left in the half on a one-yard run by Perraza and an extra point by Nathan Wannlund.

Redlands bounced back on a three-yard touchdown run by Corrales with 46 seconds left in the half to cap a 78-yard scoring drive set up on a 56-yard run by Ellison. The Terriers attempted to take the lead just before the half on a 53-yard field goal try off a free kick after a fair catch of a short punt. The kick came up just short.

Corrales scored with 7:44 left in the third quarter and Dana Hills tied score, 29-29, on Perraza’s 15-yard run. Perraza finished with 164 yards in 26 carries for Dana Hills, playing in its first playoff game in six years.

Chris Weber made three touchdown saving tackles, catching Ellison after gains of 63, 56 and 35 yards.
