Strange, Gonzales Spark Chapman

Nate Strange and Gil Gonzales each scored 17 points as Chapman defeated Pacific Christian, 75-67, in the Chapman men’s basketball tournament.

Strange also had 11 rebounds and Derek Mitchell had 15 points for the Panthers (2-0).

Axel Margaritha scored 15 points and had 19 rebounds, and Courtney Rice and Josh Whelihan each scored 12 points for Pacific Christian (3-1).

In a nonconference men’s basketball game:

Concordia 64, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 53--Sophomore Josh Giles led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points, including four three-point baskets.

Concordia jumped to a 5-0 lead to begin the game, but Claremont went ahead on a three-pointer by John Molise, which gave it a 16-13 lead.

Claremont led at halftime, 36-33, but the Eagles (3-0) held Claremont to five points in the first 12 minutes of the second half, taking a 54-41 lead.

Claremont’s Joe Selander cut the lead to eight, 57-49, with a three-pointer, but Concordia made six of its final eight free throws to seal the victory.

Montana State 97, Southern California College 68--Forward Justin McIntee, who scored 20 points and had five assists, was the offensive bright spot for Southern California College in its loss at Division I Montana State.

Forward Dan Sullivan scored a game-high 25 for Montana State (2-0). Southern California College drops to 1-3.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Concordia 77, Pomona-Pitzer 47--Heather Carll scored 20 points for Concordia (2-0). Carll also had 12 rebounds and Angela Good scored 12 points for the Eagles. Maya Jones scored 15 points in the season opener for Pomona-Pitzer.

In the Southern California Intercollegiate men’s tennis tournament:

UCI doubles advance to final--UC Irvine’s David Chang and Jeff Riba defeated Alexander Waske and Nguy Ley of San Diego State, 7-6, 7-6, in the semifinals at the L.A. Tennis Club. Chang and Riba play Pepperdine’s Kelly Gullett and Hide Sakamoto in the final at 9 a.m. today.

In nonconference men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 12, UC Santa Barbara 3--Freshman Mike Foley scored four goals to lead UC Irvine over visiting UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters (10-13) are the sixth-ranked team in the nation.
