Villa Park’s Becker Cruises Into Round of 16

Villa Park’s Katey Becker advanced to the round of 16, but teammate Arpi Kojian did not during Saturday’s Southern Section girls’ tennis individuals at Huntington Beach High.

Becker defeated Christina Son of Ocean View, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the next round, which begins Dec. 4 at the Racquet Club of Irvine. Kojian, a highly regarded freshman, lost to Kim Nguyen of Saddleback, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Jessica Prause of Laguna Hills and Etel Bugescu of University also advanced in singles.

In another regional bracket, held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Long Beach, Mater Dei’s Melissa Esmero, and Corona del Mar’s Nina and Nadia Vaughan, each won their two matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 16.

In the doubles matches held at Huntington Beach, Dana Hills’ Kate Romm and Amy Tranckino defeated Kelly Scanlon and Amanda Manton of Brea Olinda, 6-1, 6-2. Summer Tantee and Margaux Pierog, also of Dana Hills, defeated Los Alamitos’ Lauren Teweles and Monica Ralli, 6-1, 6-0.

Villa Park’s Claire Gries and Ann Kleinhenz and University’s Lucy Molnar and Annie Pham also advanced.

In the Long Beach regional, Newport Harbor’s Kristin Case and Audra Adams were among the doubles teams that advanced. Case and Adams defeated teams from Los Angeles Marymount, 6-2, 6-0, and Burbank Burroughs, 6-2, 6-0.
