* Verdugo Hills High is retiring the number of former basketball star Eddie Powell tonight at 7. Powell, who graduated in 1993, died in an automobile accident in Texas earlier this year. He was playing at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

* Fund-raising seminars featuring Rick Peterson, minor league pitching coordinator for the Oakland A’s, and Alan Jaeger, operator of the Jaeger Sports Academy, will be Dec. 5 and 6 at Royal and Lancaster highs.

The seminars, conducted by the Peak Performance Group, have two sessions: Dec. 5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Half the proceeds will go to the Royal and Lancaster athletic programs.

Player appearances will be made by former Simi Valley High catcher Tim Laker, who recently signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Bryan Corey, a right-handed pitcher from Thousand Oaks High who was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in last week’s expansion draft.
