Durham Bulls to WSC Title

Share

Glendale College finished with a 2-8 record, but the Vaqueros boasted the leading rusher in the Western State Conference, freshman Darrell Durham.

Durham rushed for 303 yards and two touchdowns Saturday in a 31-16 loss to Santa Barbara.

Durham won the rushing title with 1,500 yards.

Two for the book: Carl Richardson of Moorpark set two school rushing records Saturday while leading the Raiders to a 29-23 victory over Valley in a Western State Conference Southern Division regular-season finale.

Richardson’s 319 yards in 39 carries broke Dana Griffin’s single-game mark of 286 yards in 1987. Richardson’s 87-yard touchdown run in the second quarter eclipsed Kenny Durr’s record run of 86 yards in 1987.

Richardson, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound freshman from Rio Mesa High, rushed for four touchdowns. The victory earned Moorpark (6-4) a share of the division title and a matchup against Santa Barbara in the WSC Bowl on Dec. 6 at Santa Barbara.

Making a list: Leaford Hackett and Randall Lane, wide receivers at Valley College who probably will receive Division I scholarships, etched their names in the school record book this season.

Hackett led the Monarchs with 70 receptions, raising his two-year total to 102, third-best in school history.

Lane, in his only season at Valley, finished with 77 catches to rank seventh among career leaders.

SOCCER

Fantastic finish: UC Irvine just missed an NCAA women’s soccer playoff berth earlier this month after winning the Big West Conference tournament with the help of three players from the region.

Stephanie Rigamat, from Crescenta Valley High, assisted on the winning goal in the Big West final, a 3-2 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in sudden-death overtime.

Kori Zimmerman of La Canada gave the Anteaters (15-7) a 1-0 lead early in that match with her second goal and Rigamat pulled Irvine into a 2-2 tie with her ninth goal at 119:17, forcing the match, already in overtime, to a sudden-death format after 120 minutes.

Nicole Bucciarelli, who attended Grant, led Irvine with 13 goals.

Double fault: Former Moorpark College men’s soccer Coach Frank Parodi, fired on Nov. 20, blames conflicts with Athletic Coordinator John Keever and assistant coach Mike Evans for his ouster.

“It was interference by Keever and nonsupport from [Evans],” Parodi said. “Now it’s a question of pursuing legal action and a new career.”

Parodi, 44, coached the Raiders since 1989, leading them to three state playoff berths and a title game appearance in 1990.

Moorpark has not made the playoffs since 1993 and was 8-7-2, 2-5-1 in WSC play this season.

Parodi’s record in 14 junior college seasons is 115-77-33. He was a part-time employee at Moorpark and said he will not have his yearly contract renewed when it expires next month.

Parodi said Keever, who did not return calls from The Times, listed lack of leadership and discipline, and player complaints as reasons for his termination.

Three players were kicked off this year’s team and one from last year’s squad, Parodi said. He said Keever indicated that a 1995 incident in which a Moorpark player’s illegal participation in an outside league cost the Raiders six victories, four ties and a playoff berth as a reason for the firing.
