Cal Lutheran Gets Last Kick, 2-1

Senior forward Brian Collins scored in the 73rd minute to give Cal Lutheran a 2-1 victory over BYU-Hawaii in a men’s soccer match Wednesday at Cal Lutheran.

Collins scored on a pass from midfielder Jeff Smilen. Four minutes earlier, sophomore Oskar Kantoft of Cal Lutheran (5-2) broke a scoreless tie. Tobias Schade of BYU-Hawaii (1-4) tied the game 21 seconds later.

Kantoft leads Cal Lutheran with seven goals and Collins has two.

Cal Lutheran outshot BYU-Hawaii, 16-3. Guillermo Alvarado made two saves for the Kingsmen.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

USC 4, CS Northridge 0--The Matadors were outshot, 26-3, by the Trojans in a nonconference match at the Coliseum.

Tawni Takagi had 10 saves for Northridge (1-10), which has been outscored, 45-9, in its past 17 matches.

Cal Lutheran 2, Redlands 1--Alia Khan scored one goal and assisted on Kim Holeman’s goal in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Redlands.

Khan scored on a breakaway in the 18th minute to give Cal Lutheran a 1-0 lead. Holeman scored her team-leading eighth goal four minutes later.

The victory was the fifth consecutive for Cal Lutheran (6-2, 5-0), which is 75-1-1 in SCIAC play over the past 6 1/2 seasons, including a 30-game unbeaten streak dating to 1994.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Tri-Valley League Meet No. 1--Francisco Zavala, Pedro Garcia and Juan Churape placed second, fourth and fifth to pace Fillmore (4-0 in league) to victory in a meet at Fillmore High.

Zavala, who was running his first race of the season after being slowed by injuries, clocked 16:18 over the three-mile course to lead the Flashes to a 31-39 victory over runner-up Oak Park, which ran without top runner Steve Martin.

Frontier League Meet No. 1--Nordhoff seniors Victor Ochoa and Dusty Herman placed first and second with times of 15:01 and 15:13 over the three-mile course to pace the Rangers to a 22-57 victory over runner-up Moorpark in the meet at College Park in Oxnard.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 25, Santa Monica 11--Stephanie Hammer had nine goals and Paullette Bonetti scored five for the Monarchs (6-5, 2-0) in a Western State Conference match at Santa Monica.

Goalkeeper Melissa Minkey scored a two-point goal and had 10 saves as Valley outshot the Corsairs, 29-20.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley 25, Muir 1--Sophomore Carlos Pelayo scored a career-high six goals for the Falcons in a Pacific League match at Crescenta Valley.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Granada Hills d. El Camino Real, 15-9, 15-1, 15-8--Lindy Gayton had nine kills and Gina Karabogias had six aces and 16 assists for the Highlanders (4-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at El Camino Real.

Blair Ford had six blocks for Granada Hills.

Kennedy d. Birmingham, 15-7, 15-4, 15-7--Melissa Kuhn had 10 kills and her sister, Holly Kuhn, had 12 assists for the Golden Cougars (1-4, 1-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

Chatsworth d. Taft, 15-11, 15-3, 15-12--Kelly Cohen had eight aces for the Chancellors (2-3, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.
