Los Amigos not only withstood the constant air attack of host Bolsa Grande but countered with a strong one of its own Friday.

Couple that with Los Amigos’ powerful rushing game and the result was a 56-26 victory over Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League game Friday.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the final minute of the first half as Los Amigos led, 35-20.

Bolsa Grande (3-2, 1-1) rallied a bit. The Matadors stuffed Los Amigos on fourth down and took over at midfield with 9 minutes 48 seconds left in the half. Two plays later, quarterback Doug Baughman rolled out and threw to a wide open John Nguyen for a 50-yard scoring pass. The extra point was blocked by Najja Kee but Bolsa Grande had cut the lead to 35-26.

But Bolsa Grande didn’t come close to scoring again. Baughman, who came into the game leading Orange County with 118 attempts added 48 to his total. He completed 18 for 234 yards and three touchdowns but was also intercepted twice.

Two of those touchdown passes went to wide receiver Sam Baeder who caught six passes in the first half for 80 yards. But Baeder, who started the game second in the county with 26 receptions, didn’t play in the second half because of a sore back.

He also was missed at his defensive end position as Los Amigos pulled away.

The Lobos (4-0-1, 2-0) started to pull away when Levertis Riley scored on a four-yard run up the middle with 6:03 left in the quarter to put Los Amigos ahead, 42-26.

Los Amigos’ next drive started at its 35 and lasted one play. Quarterback Javier Acevez threw a swing pass into the right flat to Anthony Faletoi, who picked up a pair of blocks and outran two defenders to the end zone.

The touchdown pass was the fourth of the game for Acevez. He also had scoring throws of 15, 18, and 39 yards. Acevez was nine of 15 for 177 yards and one interception.

Riley also led Los Amigos with 197 yards in 17 carries and Kee added 125 yards, also in 17 carries.

“Our goal this year,” said Los Amigos Coach Roger Takahashi, “was to balance the air and ground attack a little more.”

Acevez’s 39-yard scoring pass was to Travis Harlin, who had slipped behind the Bolsa Grande secondary, with 10 seconds left in the first half.

Twenty-five seconds earlier, Bolsa Grande had scored an unlikely touchdown when Baughman picked up a one-bounce lateral and threw 38 yards to Baeder, who was wide open.
