Heffermans On the Move

Glen Hefferman returned to Ventura College from a two-day leave of absence Monday without his family.

Hefferman, 31, Ventura’s men’s basketball coach, moved his wife, Linda, and three children to the couple’s home town of Chicago over the weekend.

Although Hefferman said the family plans to reunite as soon as possible, the coach said he is uncertain when, where or under what circumstances.

It is another indicator, perhaps, that Hefferman’s tenure at Ventura might be short-lived.

Hefferman, who was hired in August, said the move was caused, in part, by sanctions imposed last week by the Western State Conference against Ventura. Sanctions include a two-year probation and a prohibition on postseason play. “This was kind of a last straw,” he said.

Hefferman’s wife, a nursing student at Ventura, was having difficulty getting into classes and the couple couldn’t find reliable day care, Hefferman said.

Hefferman said he plans to remain coach--at least, until Ventura exhausts its rights to appeal. A conference appeals meeting is scheduled for Oct. 24.

On the Case: Keith Case has been hired as girls’ basketball coach at Notre Dame High, becoming the school’s third coach in three years.

Shark shootout: Former champions Lanny Wadkins and Mark Calcavecchia are among 10 players accepting invitations to play in the ninth annual Shark Shootout Nov. 11-16 at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

The others joining the 20-man field are Chip Beck, John Cook, David Duval, David Frost, Peter Jacobsen, Bruce Lietzke, Scott McCarron and Andrew Magee. The rest of the $1.1 million field includes host Greg Norman, Tom Kite, Jay Haas, Steve Elkington, Fred Couples, Brad Faxon, Scott Hoch, Craig Stadler, John Daly and Fuzzy Zoeller.
