Tustin Has Another Big Game

Saddleback was the latest to try and stop Tustin, but the Tillers came away with a 49-7 Golden West League victory at Santa Ana Stadium on Friday.

The Roadrunners (3-4 overall, 1-1 in league) only trailed, 7-0, at the end of the first quarter and managed a first-half touchdown, something no other Tustin opponent has accomplished this year.

“They wanted to slow us down and we had to be patient,” Tustin Coach Myron Miller said. “We weren’t able to run all over them. They made us pass and that’s what broke the game open for us.”

Tustin’s senior running back, DeShaun Foster, the county’s leading rusher and scorer, rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns in 27 carries. And quarterback Todd Scott completed seven of 12 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.

Tustin (7-0, 2-0) also had to work a little harder on fourth down. The Tillers converted five of six attempts on fourth down, including a fourth-and-1 from their 27 on the first drive of the game.

Foster, who played the game on a sore ankle he sprained last week, ran for a nine-yard gain on the play. Three plays later, he ran 65 yards for his first touchdown.

Foster later scored on runs of one, four, one and three yards to give him 33 touchdowns (29 rushing) for the season.

Saddleback quarterback Daniel Bermudez, who replaced ineffective starter Sal Pedroza in the second quarter, led his team on a five-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Barnes. Carlos Rangel’s kick cut Tustin’s lead to 21-7 with 2 minutes 31 seconds left in the first half.

But Scott was able to come right back with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Tustin’s leading receiver, Julius Williams, on the next drive for a 28-7 halftime lead.
