1996 in Review

El Dorado looked to be the league doormat after finishing the preseason 0-5. But the Hawks instead stormed through the Empire, winning all five games to finish as league champion. Loara finished second, one game back, with Cypress third.

The Division V playoffs were not kind to the Empire entries, however. Only Loara was able to reach the second round, edging Irvine, 34-31, before losing to Tustin, 60-45. El Dorado was crushed by El Toro, 37-2, and Cypress was flattened by Foothill, 48-14.

El Dorado running back Steve Warfield, who rushed for 1,303 yards and 18 touchdowns, was named the league player of the year.

Other outstanding offensive performers included Loara quarterback Archie Lappin (137 of 223, 2,420 yards, 19 touchdowns); Kennedy quarterback Tom Haas (129 of 230, 1,851 yards, 17 touchdowns); Cypress quarterback James Law (98 of 188, 1,052 yards, five touchdowns); Katella quarterback John Baldridge (69 of 144, 1,057 yards, 10 touchdowns); Loara running back John Duhon (1,512 yards, 22 touchdowns); Katella running back Francis Johnson (749 yards, four touchdowns); Kennedy’s Garrett Sabol (418 yards rushing, 669 yards receiving, 16 touchdowns); and Katella receiver Art Tiscareno (42 catches, 718 yards, nine touchdowns).
