1996 in Review

Sunny Hills and Troy wound up as league co-champions with 4-1 records. Troy’s only league loss was to Sunny Hills, which lost to La Habra. Buena Park’s upset of La Habra ultimately led to its third-place league finish.

In the Division VIII playoffs, Sunny Hills defeated Costa Mesa in the first round, 14-0, but was beaten in the second round by Rancho Alamitos, 21-0. Troy also had a first-round victory, beating Los Amigos, 20-16. In the second round, the Warriors were taken out by eventual section champion Aliso Niguel, 40-7.

Buena Park was knocked out in the first round by Covina South Hills, 35-18.

Troy running back Kyion Grayes was chosen the league’s player of the year, rushing for 1,728 yards (the county’s fifth-highest total) and 21 touchdowns. He was also named to the all-Division VIII first team.

Other outstanding offensive seasons were turned in by Buena Park running back Brian McDonald (1,477 yards, 21 touchdowns); Sunny Hills running back Adam Rodriguez (1,001 yards, nine touchdowns); La Habra quarterback Robert Morales (97 of 216, 1,651 yards, 22 touchdowns); Fullerton quarterback Justin Bruce (101 of 188, 1,122 yards, 10 touchdowns); La Habra running back Jesse Giovanetti (883 yards, nine touchdowns); and La Habra receiver Nick Armstrong (48 catches, 829 yards, nine touchdowns).

Others receiving postseason honors included Sunny Hills lineman Jayson Hayward and Troy defensive back J.D. Lawrence. Both were named to The Times all-county second team.
