1996 in Review

Valencia showed in 1996 that the previous season was not a trend. The Tigers had their string of seasons in which they qualified for the playoffs snapped at 14 that year, but Marrujo, in his 15th year, brought Valencia back on top with a first-place finish in 1996.

Anaheim, behind the performances of Times all-county players Jose Rodriguez and Jesus Acevedo, finished 4-1 and shared the league title with Valencia, but a 14-0 loss to the Tigers in the second-to-last league game made Valencia the top-seeded team from the league.

Western was hit hard by graduation from its 1995 team that went 10-0. Still, the Pioneers won their last three games of the regular season to slip into the playoffs ahead of Brea Olinda.

Savanna had its second consecutive disappointing season, losing five out of its last six games after winning three of its first four.

Magnolia shared last place with Savanna, but the Sentinels had a bright spot with their 19-17 victory over Valencia, the eventual league champion.

“It was a war, a war of attrition,” Magnolia Coach Bill Friedrich said. “They knocked out all of our running backs, our best tackle. They lost [Matt] Randolph and [Brandon] Blackly.”

Because of injuries, Valencia eventually used an inexperienced defensive back and Magnolia burned him for a late touchdown. Valencia then fumbled away its final opportunity.
