1996 in Review

Aliso Niguel, featuring the Wolverines’ first senior class that spent four years at the school, finished its 14-0 season with a 32-21 Southern Section Division VIII championship victory over Pacifica--its only playoff game decided by fewer than 21 points.

The Wolverines became the top-seeded team in the division when they beat top-ranked Laguna Hills, 28-21, in the final week of the season. The game turned when John Hefty returned a kickoff 83 yards at the end of the first half, then on the second play of the second half, threw the downfield block that enabled Scott Nemeth, the league’s most valuable player, to score on a 75-yard run.

Laguna Hills, one of only four unbeaten teams in the county at the time, lost the following week in the first round of the playoffs, 17-13, to Pacifica, the at-large team.

Laguna Hills’ Michael Jones finished with 2,131 yards (third in the county) and 29 touchdowns. With 5,021 yards in his career, he needs only 917 to break the county record set by Valencia’s Ray Pallares.

It was a good year for the league’s running backs. The PCL had three of the county’s top 10 rushers, and five of the top 30. After Jones came Nemeth (eighth, 1,568 yards, 32 touchdowns), Estancia’s James Dawkins (10th, 1,483), and Costa Mesa’s Steve Herzog (22nd, 1,108) and Vince Hamade (30th, 948).
