1996 in Review

Esperanza was ranked third in the county, seemingly sailing to a second consecutive outright league title until the Aztecs ran into Fountain Valley in the final week of the regular season. The Barons came away with a 29-22 victory, and that threw the league into a three-way tie among Fountain Valley, Esperanza and Los Alamitos.

Fountain Valley won the coin toss for the league’s top seeding for the Division I playoffs. The placing didn’t help, however; the Barons were defeated in the first round by then-defending champion La Puente Bishop Amat.

Los Alamitos and Esperanza were also ushered out of the playoffs in the first round. The Griffins were beaten by Long Beach Poly, 22-16, and the Aztecs fell to Redlands, 6-0.

Outstanding offensive seasons by Sunset League players included those of Los Alamitos quarterback Sean Stein (180 of 277, 2,547 yards, 25 touchdowns); Esperanza quarterback David Parrish (132 of 223, 2,205 yards, 18 touchdowns); Fountain Valley running back Andrew Medley (1,069 yards, 14 touchdowns); Esperanza running back Jammal Footman (923 yards, eight touchdowns); Fountain Valley quarterback Mike Lamar (127 of 232, 1,783 yards, 14 touchdowns); Los Alamitos receiver Ryan Dunbar (54 catches, 623 yards,) and Los Alamitos kicker Mike Phillips (nine field goals, 44 extra points).
