A Look at Today’s Key Matchups

ALEMANY (0-0) vs. NOTRE DAME (0-0) At Notre Dame High, 7 p.m.

Moved up a day to accommodate a live telecast on Fox Sports West 2, this opener promises to draw an overflow crowd. The main attraction is Notre Dame senior tailback Justin Fargas, who rushed for 2,970 yards and scored 38 touchdowns last season. In addition, the contest marks the head coaching debut of Alemany’s Jim Bonds, a former Hart and UCLA quarterback and most recently, the offensive coordinator at St. Francis. Notre Dame returns linemen Brandon Woods and Craig Johnson and senior tight end Joe Aragno. They go against an Indian defensive front that Bonds admits is a potential liability.

THOUSAND OAKS (0-0) vs. CRESCENTA VALLEY (0-0) At Glendale High, 7:30 p.m.

This is the third consecutive season these teams have opened against each other. Thousand Oaks (7-3-1 last season) won, 30-12, last year and took a 22-6 decision in ’95. With several key players back, Crescenta Valley (6-5) might have the upper hand this time. Quarterback-running back Kenny Pritchett will try to top a 1,711-yard rushing effort as a junior and talented linebackers Chris Oliver and Jesse Busta lead a defense that yielded 255 yards per game. Thousand Oaks has lost most of its skill position players and will rely on 6-foot-3 senior quarterback Scott Ange, who has moved over from linebacker.
