St. Joseph Routs Santa Clara, 41-0

Senior wide receiver Mike Draper did a little bit of everything, leading Santa Maria St. Joseph High over Santa Clara, 41-0, Saturday night in a season opener at Channel Islands High.

Draper caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Matt Cova and returned a punt 54 yards for another score, both in the first quarter.

Defensively, Draper had an interception and forced a fumble that led to another touchdown.

St. Joseph led at halftime, 28-0.

St. Joseph running back Kevin Teixeira had four carries for 51 yards and scored on runs of 31 and eight yards.

Santa Clara, which suited up only 20 players, was led by running back Jose Resendiz, who rushed for 22 yards in 14 carries.

The Saints’ best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter, when they drove to the St. Joseph 18-yard line. But on fourth down, quarterback Kevin Gormley (nine carries, 19 yards) was tackled for a three-yard loss.

The Knights outgained Santa Clara, 269 yards to 92.
