Crews Nearing Containment of 2 Wildfires

YUCAIPA — Firefighters were optimistic about corralling two San Bernardino County wildfires that have burned more than 1,365 acres of brush, authorities said Tuesday.

A 940-acre fire several miles from Yucaipa was 75% surrounded, with full containment expected Tuesday evening, while a 425-acre fire near City Creek and California 330 was 30% surrounded, fire officials said.

The City Creek fire was intentionally set Monday afternoon, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Candace Vialpando. California 330 remained shut while state highway officials inspected the road.

One firefighter suffered a fractured arm and bruised ribs, she said. Firefighters expected to contain the blaze by 6 a.m. today and control it by 6 p.m. Thursday.

To the southeast, seven firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the Yucaipa fire, which was started Monday afternoon by a downed power line, said California Department of Forestry spokesman Bill Peters.

Firefighters worked in mid-90s heat and low humidity and bee stings were a problem, Peters said.

A barn and shed were destroyed, but flames burned away from residences in Yucaipa, about 75 northeast of downtown Los Angeles, Peters said.
