Northridge on Short End of Long Night

A long night got longer and longer for the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team.

The University of San Diego defeated the Matadors, 13-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-9, 15-9, in a nonconference match Tuesday night at Northridge.

The match lasted two hours 27 minutes, and two Matadors set career highs.

Nicki Midwin had 22 kills and Ellie Flato had 71 assists.

Midwin tied a career high with 19 digs.

But the Matadors (8-3) couldn’t contain the Toreros’ big three of Petia Yanchulova (29 kills), Sara Gunsaulus (26 kills) and LaManda Mounts (24 kills).

No other player had more than six kills for San Diego (11-2).

Nancy Ma had 26 kills for the Matadors, who took a 2-1 lead in games, but totaled only 20 kills in the final two games.

In other volleyball matches:

Cal State Dominguez Hills d. Cal Lutheran, 17-15, 15-11, 15-7--Lauren McCartin, who played at Saugus High, had 21 kills, but the Regals (0-3) fell in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.

Marianne Moll, who played at Santa Clara High, had 12 kills for the Regals.

Circe Thompson had 16 kills and Jennifer Morris added 12 for Dominguez Hills (6-6).

Cal State Los Angeles d. The Master’s, 15-4, 15-4, 15-2--Misty May had six kills for the Mustangs (7-11), who had only 19 kills and made 13 errors.

Jamie Griffin had nine kills for Cal State L.A. (14-4).

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 3, Westmont 2--Paul Dojo scored six minutes into overtime on a pass from Rusty Brooke and the Mustangs upset the Warriors in a nonconference match at The Master’s.

Lucas Principe’s goal in the 80th minute pulled Master’s into a 2-2 tie.

Goalkeeper Kris Bage made seven saves for the Mustangs (4-5).

Westmont (5-2-1) is ranked third in the NAIA Division I poll and had seven consecutive shutout victories over Master’s dating to 1992.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 5, Bakersfield 0--Janet Cooper, Krista Janik, Mandee Westbrook, Melissa Thaxton and Carrie Waller scored for the Pirates (8-2, 2-0) in a Western State Conference victory over the Renegades (5-2, 2-1) at Ventura.

Barbara Almaraz added two assists for Ventura, top-ranked among the state’s women’s junior college soccer teams.
