Geiger’s Goal Helps Laguna Beach Defeat Los Alamitos

Laguna Beach, ranked eighth in Orange County, beat third-ranked Los Alamitos, 8-7, in overtime in the South Coast water polo tournament.

Johnny Geiger scored the winning goal for the Artists in their second-round game. Tyler Wawrzynski scored two goals for the Griffins (6-2).

In other tournament games:

Foothill 11, University 8--Matt McPherson scored two goals in the second-round victory over University (6-3) and four in a 17-5 victory over Long Beach Poly for top-ranked Foothill (4-0).

Foothill plays tonight at 6 at seventh-ranked Newport Harbor.

San Clemente 18, Servite 9--Seniors Jordan Hewko scored five goals and D.J. Yeilding had four to lead San Clemente. Josh Hewko, freshman brother of Jordan, contributed three goals for the second-ranked Tritons.

Villa Park 9, Santa Margarita 3--Nick Pacelli, who scored a career-high eight goals in Villa Park’s 14-4 rout of Tustin in a first-round game, added two more goals and five assists against fourth-ranked Santa Margarita. Kyle Baumgarner had four goals for the sixth-ranked Spartans in the second-round game.

Villa Park goalkeeper Matt Doerr had a strong game against the Eagles, stopping 11 shots. The Spartans (6-2) play second-ranked San Clemente at Tustin tonight at 6.

In the Rowland Heights Rowland tournament:

Brea Olinda 8, Chino Hills Ayala 7--Mark Becker scored the winning goal for Brea Olinda (2-1) with 1 minute 33 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats advanced to today’s quarterfinals against Bell Gardens.

La Habra 12, Hacienda Heights Wilson 9--Nathan Allard’s game-high five goals helped La Habra (7-3) advance to the third round. The Highlanders defeated El Dorado, 8-7, in a first-round game.

In the Magnolia tournament:

Mater Dei 15, Pacifica 6--Junior Johnny Deakers scored eight goals to lead Mater Dei (4-1) in the first-round game.

Western 5, Mission Hills Alemany 4--Jace Crispin had three goals to help Western advance to the second round. Ronny Cunningham kept Alemany scoreless in the fourth quarter and had 11 saves overall. Western hosts Mater Dei in the second round at 2:30 today.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Katella 17, El Dorado 45--Sophomore Danny Mejia had little trouble in the rain as he won the two-mile race in 15:38 for second-ranked Katella.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback runners take first and second--Pasqual Contreras finished first with a time of 16:57 for Saddleback, which won the meet with Servite and Ocean View. Teammate Jason Al-Immam was second (17:02) on the 3.1-mile course at Acacia Park. Servite was second and Ocean View third.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 25, Fountain Valley 30--Jose Vazquez led the way as Marina (1-0) placed three runners in the top five. Vazquez won the race in 15:52, Richard Lloyd took fourth (16:31) and Dustin Coy was fifth (16:34) at Huntington Beach Central Park.

In Century League girls’ cross country:

Villa Park 25, Canyon 31--Marie Leyere won in 20:52 for Villa Park (1-0). Teammate Maribel Calderon finished second in 21:11 at Canyon High.
