Vanguards Split Doubleheader With Cal Baptist

Michelle Murie hit a two-run double with two outs in the third inning and Southern California College went on to beat Cal Baptist, 5-0, in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday.

Gretchen Brandt gave up three hits, striking out six for the Vanguards.

In the second game, Cal Baptist (13-13, 1-3) rallied from a 4-1 deficit, as Michelle Wells hit a bases-loaded triple in the top of the seventh for a 5-4 victory.

SCC (31-7, 5-1) stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh.

In nonconference softball:

CS San Bernardino 8-7, Concordia 1-3--Holly Bradford pitched a three-hitter, then a five-hitter, to shut down Concordia. Bradford improved to 14-5.

Bradford, Kim Basham, Wendy Hellerud and Nicole Fiola each had two hits in the first game for Cal State San Bernardino (27-10). Hellerud had two hits and two run in the second game.

Concordia is 13-18-1.

In nonconference baseball:

The Master’s 13, Concordia 9--Eric Fuller had two hits and three RBIs for The Master’s (23-5). Teammate Preston Sprinkle had two hits and two RBIs.

Derek Patterson had three hits and five RBIs for Concordia. Teammate Justin Duke had two hits and three RBIs.

Southern California College 3, Birmingham Southern 1--Donovan McReynold gave up two hits in eight innings to get the victory for Southern California College (19-15). Mike Grasse had an RBI double in the second inning for the Vanguards.
